Considering GLP medications?

If you are considering going on weight loss medications then establishing positive habits first is imperative. Strength training 2-3 times a week whilst taking the medication is a must to maintain bone density, muscle mass and to reduce the risk of fragility, falls and fractures. Research shows that when GLP medications are taken as much as 40-60% of weight lost is lean muscle (NOT FAT). This could have huge implications for health, function and long term weight management.

Diet wise good habits to form before would include having a good source of protein with every meal. You need to be eating at least 1.2g of protein per kilo of bodyweight per day and make sure you are getting adequate fibre.

Once on the drug, if both a very high protein diet and strength training are not prioritised, once the drug is discontinued fat mass returns more quickly because metabolic rate has gone down as a result of losing lean muscle. This means you could end up heavier than before with less lean muscle and weaker bones.

The drugs are not a plan they are the intervention. Making a good plan before you go on the drug and getting your body ready by building muscle and prioritising the right food will ensure the best success. Building the right foundation is an absolute must. Nathalie’s Beginners Online Strength Package is a perfect way to help prepare you to start resistance training at home safely.

This is general nutrition advice not medical advice. Please speak to your GP if you are taking or considering taking GLP-1 medication. Please note these medications are not recommended when trying to conceive, during pregnancy or whilst breastfeeding.
